Once I wrote an email at work that was really misunderstood.
I was working as the head of marketing for a big company that had fashions retail stores in different cities and we were about to open two new ones. I was trying to make a suggestion about the strategy suggested for the opening of a new store and, because I wrote it short some people in the team took it as a negative critic.
Here’s what happened, I suggested to change one of the opening musical numbers because it was too flashy and over the top, during a serious political crisis at the moment. I didn’t wanted the company to look insensitive to political issues, there for I suggested a modest approach to the opening show.
The production team felt that I was criticizing the idea of having a flashy over the top musical act for the opening. They felt I was suggesting they taste in music was poor and this open an email chain reaction with lots of opinions, arguments and critics that were a big waste of time and unproductive for everybody.
I had to re write the whole thing and make personal apologies and suggestions to the parties involved.
It was a hard week.
