Background
Since rhetorical analysis can be a highly-recursive process, you should slowly begin working on Writing Project #5 by selecting the website you would like to analyze in Module 7. This will help you to get a sense of whether your website choice will work well for the rhetorical analysis assignment.
Purpose
In this journal, you will have the opportunity to begin the website selection process for Writing Project #5, the Rhetorical Analysis. Selecting a viable website now will make your work easier during Module 7.
Skills and Outcomes
· Differentiating rhetorical strategies in a website (Rhetorical Knowledge; Critical Thinking, Reading and Composing; Knowledge of Conventions)
· Briefly summarizing how the strategies imply a clear purpose (or do not) (Rhetorical Knowledge; Critical Thinking, Reading and Composing)
· Critiquing the website’s viability as a subject for Writing Project #5 (Critical Thinking, Reading and Composing; Processes)
Habits of Mind Practiced
· Persistence
· Flexibility
· Metacognition
Tasks
· First, re-read the assignment sheet for Writing Project #5, paying close attention to the types of websites that are suitable for the assignment.
· Second, pick three websites that seem interesting to you (and meet the assignment parameters for type of website).
I am choosing University of Chicago, FAV Club, Canva
· Third, for each website make a list of strategies you are able to find easily & quickly.
· For U Chicago, I am choosing a Rethorical Knowledge Strategy, for FAV Club a Critical Thinking and for Canva, Reading and Composing.
· Fourth, for each list, sketch a summary that describes how the strategies imply a particular purpose (and what that purpose might be).
· I am choosing the strategy according to the site tone and objective.
· Finally, review your lists and summaries and make a judgment about which website would best lend itself to the Rhetorical Analysis assignment. (The more strategies you are able to identify on a website and the more clearly they imply a particular purpose, the easier it will be to do an in-depth rhetorical analysis).
